Here are a couple of
verses
Dedicated to You, the NICU
Nurses:
You are talented,
intelligent and caring
That is something we need
to be sharing
You are also compassionate,
sympathetic,
Concerned, friendly, and
energetic.
Here are some of the clues
From the baby’s point of
view:
When you take my vital
signs
You whisper reassuring
lines
Then you document my
signs
On forms of various
kinds.
When you take my
temperature in the crib
You frequently tickle my
rib
Then you dress me in
beautiful clothes
And even put socks on my
cold toes.
When you weigh me on the
scale
You cover me, so I don’t
get pale
You are elated when I gain
weight
And my weight curve rises
straight.
When you give me a bath
with a sponge
You prevent me from taking
a plunge
You make sure it is done
quickly
So I don’t get cold and
sickly.
When my diaper is dirty or
wet
You change it as quick as a
jet
And if I have a mild diaper
rash
You rub on some Destin
mash.
You help my mother with
breast feeding
To make sure it’s
succeeding
If not, you give me a
premature meal
Which is okay, but not
ideal
If I’m too immature to feed by
nippling
You feed me with a NG tube
by dripping
When you slip an extra
milliliter in my meal
I feel contented, and I
wouldn’t squeal
When you start an
intravenous line
You make sure I don’t have
to whine
You also watch the site
intensely
To make sure it doesn’t
puff up hencely
When you stick me with an
IM medication
You make sure I have a
little sedation
When you give me oral
medication
You do it with much
animation.
When I get apnea, you give
me caffeine
And if necessary, puffs of
oxygen in between
If I hold my breath to any
degree
You quickly and gently
stimulate me.
When I’m crying and
upset
You first check if my
diaper’s wet
Then you fold towels and
try nesting
Or pick me up and try
cuddling.
When I’m quiet and
resting
And without me
requesting
You give me a quick
relaxing look
Or read me a story from a
book.
You celebrate a special
date
By doing something unique
and great
You place my footprint on a
Valentine’s Heart
Or you turn my photo into
an art.
You help the obstetrician
with my circumcision
Making sure I’m pain free,
with precision
You give me oral sucrose at
the right dose
And make sure the doctor
doesn’t cut to close.
For my family, you spend a
lot of time teaching
Providing support, without
actual preaching
You talk to them and give
them information
Which comforts them and
renews their inspiration.
When the unit is so
busy
You run around and become
dizzy
Sometimes you don’t have
time to eat
But your notes are always
complete.
You always have time to
help your associate
Even without anyone trying
to negotiate
You update them with new
information
Which only proves your
collaboration
When the census drops to
very little
You have to sit home and
twiddle
Or you do a lot of
cleaning
When gives the place new
meaning.
In Summary, I want to thank
you for
comforting and caring for
me
Because You, the NICU
nurses,
are the vital and important
key
